State Islamic University Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta Initiates an International Post-Doctoral Program

Yudian Wahyudi, Rector of the State Islamic University Sunan Kalijjaga Yogyakarta, reported that the university is initiating an international postdoctoral program during his visit to the Minister of Religious Affairs of Republic Indonesia, Lukman Hakim Saifuddin at January 18, 2017. He further pointed out that this is a pioneer program conducted by universities in Indonesia to respond to language, academic and financial challenges faced by Indonesian lecturers to undertake such a program overseas.

The postdoctoral program is planned to be conducted for 8 months. To the date, 15 lecturers have been involved in the program, 8 people from Yogyakarta, 4 people from Pekalongan, and 3 others from Jember. Starting from March 1, 2017, one lecturer from the US and one from Germany will also be involved.

The involvement of international scholars in the program shall increase opportunities to publish the article in international journals and promoting the university as well. Yudian argues that “through this program, State Islamic University Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta will produce qualified professors, it would also promote the university to become a world class university in the area of Islamic Studies”.

His visit to the Minister was also aimed to report that State Islamic University Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta in collaboration with Bank Syariah Mandiri is conducting an Indonesia Islamic University Conference (IIUC), where the Minister would deliver a keynote address. During the conference, memorandum of understanding will be signed by rectors from other Islamic studies institutes and universities in Indonesia in the organization of the postdoctoral program.

So far, numbers of institutes for Islamic Studies have positively responded to the program and plan to send their prospective students and lecturers to involve in the program. Some of them are IAIN Jember, STAIN Pekalongan, IAIN Purwokerto, IAIN Surakarta, UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang.

The Minister expressed his appreciation to both State Islamic University Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta and Bank Syariah Mandiri (BSM) for initiating the conference as well as the postdoctoral program with financial support from the Bank Syari’ah Mandiri in the form of fellowship. (Source:
