Emblem and Logo

As part of efforts to renew the image of UIN Sunan Kalijaga, changes was made to the university's emblem and logo in 2010. The new emblem and logo are as follows.

The basic shape of the emblem and logo is a sunflower with one stem and two leaves. The petals are depicted in the form of classical Islamic-style ornaments. The left leaf visualizes the letter ‘U’, the stem visualizes the letter ‘I’, and the right leaf represents the letter ‘N’, so that it can be read as U-I-N.

The flower-shaped emblem resembles a spider web symbolizing the interconnection and relationship between science and religion, which is engraved in the mosaic icon on the outer wall of the UIN building—taken from the ornaments on the walls of the Alhambra Palace during the Umayyad Caliphate in Granada, Spain, which covers a hilly area. The Alhambra Palace was completed in the 14th century, during the reign of Muhammad Yusuf, 1333-1353, and Muhammad V, Sultan of Granada, 1353-1391, during the Nasrid Dynasty/Daulah Ahmar (1232-1492). The ornamental art has greatly influenced various buildings in the East and West. This fusion of East and West (La syarqiyyah wa la gharbiyyah) can be interpreted as the vision and mission of UIN, which seeks to overcome the dichotomy of knowledge and move towards the integration and interconnection of scientific fields to achieve a superior civilization.

Ornamental motifs are a combination of high artistic taste from Islamic culture in the Middle East and European culture in the West as a symbol of integration and interconnection. Upon closer inspection, several ornaments on UIN buildings have applied the use of two square shapes as the basic elements for forming these ornaments.

The visual of a flower was chosen as the basic shape for the logo because it is a symbol of beauty, fragrance, harmony, balance, and goodness. Allah SWT loves beauty and fragrance because Allah SWT is the most beautiful and the most fragrant. This implies that UIN always brings calmness and beauty to the surrounding environment as well as fragrance in carrying out all its activities. This can also be interpreted that UIN Sunan Kalijaga truly intends to instill a spirit and character of humanity that is rahmatan lil 'alamin.

The golden yellow petals are taken from precious metals, signifying luxury, honor, glory, eternity, loyalty, and devotion. This implies sharpness of mind, grandeur of ideals, nobility of character, brilliance of thought, and spirituality towards UIN Sunan Kalijaga as an excellent and leading university. Luxury and wealth are embodied in the form of depth of knowledge, richness of character, maturity, and local cultural wisdom. UIN Sunan Kalijaga aims to be excellent and outstanding, yet remains modest and humble.

The green color on the leaves symbolizes continuity, freshness, naturalness, and renewal. Green is a symbol of hope, growth, birth, prosperity, fertility, and regeneration through continuous innovation.

Green has a history of continuity for the transformation of UIN Sunan Kalijaga. Green also carries a religious message, because in Surah Al-Insan (76): 21 and Al-Kahfi (18): 31, it is reported that the inhabitants of heaven wear green clothes.
