YOGYAKARTA — UIN Sunan Kalijaga is
urging universities to move beyond sustainability rankings toward deeper
institutional transformation, as it hosted a UI GreenMetric workshop attended
by more than 50 higher education leaders.
The forum, held on April 29 and organized with
UI GreenMetric, focused on redefining sustainability as a governance and
cultural shift rather than a metric-driven target.
Speakers said rankings should be treated as outcomes,
not goals, with universities expected to embed sustainability across
infrastructure, research, and academic systems.
UI GreenMetric official Rahmi said the 2026
methodology introduces stronger indicators, including governance and
digitalization, highlighting the role of institutional integrity and digital
transformation in sustainability efforts.
Panelists stressed that sustainability must
begin with mindset changes, including responsible resource use, low-emission
mobility, and waste management practices on campus.
Academic participants also underlined the need
to integrate sustainability into teaching and research, warning that fragmented
systems would limit long-term impact.
The workshop brought together 56 universities
and included discussions on infrastructure, transportation, water management,
and education systems aligned with sustainability goals.
The initiative reflects a broader push among
Indonesian universities to reposition campuses as active agents in addressing
environmental challenges, rather than passive participants in global rankings
