Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta has officially launched its Sentra Hak Kekayaan Intelektual (Intellectual Property Center) and signed a cooperation agreement with the Direktorat Jenderal Kekayaan Intelektual (DJKI) — Indonesia’s Directorate General of Intellectual Property under the Ministry of Law and Human Rights — as part of its push to bolster the national innovation ecosystem.
At the event held on July 2, 2025, attended by faculty, students, and partner universities, UIN Sunan Kalijaga’s Rector, Prof. Noorhaidi Hasan, underscored the critical role of higher education in cultivating a culture of innovation backed by strong legal protection.
“Sentra HKI represents the spirit of collaboration between academia, government, industry, and civil society. We live in an era where ideas and creativity outweigh natural resources,” Prof. Noorhaidi stated.
He emphasized the need to move beyond static academic outputs toward impactful innovation:
“Too many of our innovations remain buried in paperwork. With DJKI’s support, we’re now confident to protect and scale them.”
Reflecting on his recent participation in an international forum in the UK, Prof. Noorhaidi noted a shift toward more balanced partnerships between universities in the Global South and Global North, with the emphasis now placed on genuine knowledge production.
“Among our academic works, some must be downstreamed (dihilirkan) into science and technology innovations that benefit society at large,” he added.
“The launch of Sentra HKI is only the beginning. We aim to build a network of centers that promote legal awareness, defend originality, and uphold ethics in creation.”
The event concluded with a symbolic gong strike to mark the center’s launch and a keynote lecture by DJKI Director General, Ir. Razilu, on “Strategi Merancang Luaran Riset Inovasi menjadi Paten” (Strategies for Designing Research Outputs into Patents).
With this initiative, UIN Sunan Kalijaga reaffirms its role as not just a university, but a national driver of inclusive, ethical, and sovereignty-based innovation.
