YOGYAKARTA — UIN Sunan Kalijaga has been ranked among Indonesia’s top five
universities in law, according to the 2026 Scimago Institutions Rankings (SIR),
marking another milestone in the university’s growing academic profile.
The university placed fifth nationally in the
law category and 262nd globally, positioning it alongside leading Indonesian
institutions such as Universitas Airlangga, Universitas Indonesia, and
Universitas Gadjah Mada.
The ranking follows the university’s recent
global recognition in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, where it
secured 37th place worldwide in Theology, Divinity and Religious Studies.
Scimago rankings are based on three key
indicators: research performance, innovation output, and societal impact
measured through web visibility.
Rector Noorhaidi Hasan said the achievement
reflects the university’s sustained commitment to strengthening research
quality and scientific publication. He noted that, under the coordination of
the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), the university
continues to expand research funding schemes and provide incentives for
internationally published work.
Dean of the Faculty of Sharia and Law, Ali
Sodiqin, said the ranking underscores a strong research culture within the
faculty, supported by regular academic programs such as research dissemination
forums, classical Islamic studies (turats), and monthly methodology clinics.
The faculty currently manages eight academic
journals in law. Two—Al Ahwal and Al Mazahib—are indexed in Scopus, while the
remaining journals are nationally accredited under the Sinta system.
Faculty data from 2025 show that 52 lecturers
produced 78 internationally indexed publications, representing more than 62 percent
of the total 83 academic staff.
Students are also actively encouraged to
publish, with incentives provided for scientific publications. For graduate
students, publication is a mandatory requirement for degree completion, forming
part of a broader strategy to build a sustainable research ecosystem in legal
studies.
The university said the achievement is
expected to further strengthen its competitiveness at both national and global
levels.
