Understanding the Meaning of International Accreditation, as Four FST Study Programs at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Earn ASIIN Recognition

Accreditation is often treated as a marker of a university's quality. Yet not many people truly understand what lies behind an international accreditation. Is it merely a certificate that adds to a campus's prestige, or does it genuinely bring about change in the educational process?

For universities, international accreditation is essentially a process to ensure that the quality of education continues to run in line with globally recognized standards. What is assessed is not just documents or administration, but how students learn, how lecturers teach, how the curriculum is designed, and how graduates are prepared to have competencies relevant to the development of knowledge.

This is the commitment once again demonstrated by the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. Four of its study programs (Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics) have successfully retained international accreditation from ASIIN (the Accreditation Agency for Degree Programs in Engineering, Informatics, Natural Sciences and Mathematics).

Vice Dean for Academic Affairs of the Faculty of Science and Technology at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Prof. Dr. Ir. Shofwatul 'Uyun, explained that ASIIN was chosen for its comprehensive focus on assessing the quality of study programs in the fields of science and mathematics.

“ASIIN standards comprehensively assess the quality of the curriculum, the learning process, graduate competencies, governance, and the sustainable quality assurance system,” she explained.

This means, Prof. Uyun continued, that international recognition does not only look at the end result in the form of graduates, but also ensures that every stage of education runs well. The curriculum must be relevant to the development of knowledge, the learning process must be effective, lecturers must have competencies appropriate to their fields, academic facilities must support the learning process, and the entire delivery of education must be evaluated periodically so that it continues to improve.

According to Prof. Uyun, when a study program is declared to meet ASIIN standards, this serves as recognition that the quality of education in that program has met international standards.

“This recognition covers a curriculum that is relevant to the development of knowledge, a quality learning process, competent lecturers, adequate facilities, a sustainable quality assurance system, and graduates who possess competencies suited to the needs of both the academic world and industry,” she said.

This recognition is then translated into students' everyday learning experience. In the classroom, for instance, the learning approach is directed toward student-centered learning, in which students are not merely recipients of material but actively discuss, collaborate, explore, and solve real problems.

At the same time, Prof. Uyun continued, lecturers act as facilitators who design learning experiences so that every student is able to achieve the competencies that have been set.

This approach is known as Outcome-Based Education (OBE), a learning system oriented toward graduates' learning outcomes.

“ASIIN accreditation encourages more student-centered learning. Lecturers not only deliver material but also design learning experiences that are more active, collaborative, and problem-solving based. Students are encouraged to be more critical, independent, and able to apply their knowledge and skills in facing real-world challenges,” she said.

This culture of quality is also one of the reasons why international accreditation cannot be viewed as an end goal. Rather, it serves as a mechanism that drives study programs to continually evaluate themselves, update their curricula, enhance lecturer competencies, strengthen academic facilities, and build engagement with various stakeholders.

For students, the impact comes in the form of a continually evolving learning experience. Students gain the opportunity to take part in an educational process designed according to international standards, have broader opportunities for various forms of academic collaboration, and are equipped with competencies relevant to the needs of both the academic world and industry.

Ultimately, the success of the four study programs at the Faculty of Science and Technology, UIN Sunan Kalijaga, in maintaining ASIIN international accreditation is not merely about recognition, but about trust. Students gain assurance of learning within an academic ecosystem that continues to grow. For prospective students, this achievement serves as an important reference point in choosing a study program with a strong commitment to quality.

Meanwhile, for the government, the business world, industry, and academic partners, this recognition reaffirms that UIN Sunan Kalijaga consistently prepares graduates with competencies built through internationally ranked educational standards. International accreditation thus becomes a foundation for continuing to deliver education that is relevant, accountable, and impactful for society. (humassk)
