UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta is once again bringing innovation to higher education by opening an Applied Bachelor's (D4) Study Program in Halal Production Technology at the Faculty of Science and Technology. As a new study program, Halal Production Technology is designed to meet the needs of the halal industry, which continues to grow both nationally and globally.
The launch of this study program is also part of UIN Sunan Kalijaga's commitment to delivering education that stays relevant to the times and to the needs of the job market. The program brings together science, technology, industry, and sharia studies to produce graduates with both technical competence and a comprehensive understanding of the principles and systems behind halal product assurance.
Head of Admissions at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Handini, M.I.Kom., explained that the growth of the Muslim population, both in Indonesia and worldwide, has created a highly promising halal market. Demand for halal products and services continues to grow, not only in the food and beverage sector but also in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fashion, and halal tourism.
According to Handini, this enormous market potential has not yet been fully matched by adequate halal production capacity. Indonesia, as the country with the world's largest Muslim population, has significant potential to become a major player in the global halal industry. Even so, a gap still exists between the supply and demand of halal products, both to meet domestic needs and to serve international markets.
"This creates both an opportunity and a challenge for Indonesia to prepare human resources with specialized competence in the halal industry. The presence of UIN Sunan Kalijaga's D4 program in Halal Production Technology is expected to play a role in preparing professionals capable of meeting that need," Handini explained.
The D4 Halal Production Technology program is designed to produce applied-degree graduates who are professional in halal product oversight and quality control, covering both goods and services. Graduates will also be equipped with the skills to examine and resolve various issues in halal production systems effectively and efficiently.
In addition, students will gain the competence to assess the feasibility of, and develop, halal product, from raw materials and the production process through to distribution within the halal supply chain. These competencies are expected to prepare graduates as human resources ready to contribute across the halal industry's many growing sectors.
The knowledge developed in this study program is multidisciplinary by design. Coursework integrates the sciences, physics, chemistry, and biology; engineering and technology fields such as industrial engineering, informatics engineering, food technology, and agro-industrial technology; as well as sharia and Islamic law, covering the Qur'an and Hadith, fiqh, and usul al-fiqh (principles of Islamic jurisprudence). Students will also engage with statistics and mathematics.
This multidisciplinary approach aligns with the integration-interconnection paradigm that is one of UIN Sunan Kalijaga's defining characteristics. By connecting science and technology with Islamic studies, students are expected not only to understand the technical aspects of production, but also to build a values-based foundation and sharia understanding for developing and overseeing halal products.
In terms of curriculum, the D4 Halal Production Technology program carries a course load of 144 credit units (SKS), made up of required and elective courses. Students can complete the program in a minimum of 8 semesters, or 4 years. Notably, the coursework is designed with a composition of 25 percent theory and 75 percent hands-on practice, giving students learning experience that is closely aligned with the needs of the industry.
This curriculum structure is aimed at producing graduates who are ready to enter the workforce with practical skills for the halal industry. Graduates of the D4 Halal Production Technology program are expected to be qualified for roles such as Halal Product Quality Control Supervisor, Developer of Substitutes for Critical or Non-Halal Materials, and Halal Product Feasibility Assessor and Product Developer.
With this profile, graduates are expected to fill a range of professional positions within the halal industry, from quality oversight and product development to raw material control and the management and development of halal production systems. Demand for professionals in this field is projected to keep growing alongside the expansion of the halal industry in Indonesia and around the world.
For the 2026/2027 academic year, UIN Sunan Kalijaga's D4 Halal Production Technology program has a quota of 40 students. Those who successfully complete the program will earn the academic degree of Sarjana Terapan (S.Tr.), or Applied Bachelor's Degree, in line with the vocational education pathway they pursue.
Admission to this study program is open through the Independent Pathway based on UTBK-SNBT scores, requiring applicants to submit their 2025 or 2026 UTBK test results. Applicants who have taken the 2026 Independent Pathway Science CBT can also apply by submitting their participant card or PMB (New Student Admissions) number. Registration is open from August 8–17, 2026, followed by portfolio selection by the committee on August 18 and the announcement of results on August 19, 2026.
