International recognition for a university rests on long-term academic work, the quality of education, research productivity, and knowledge contributions that carry weight within the scientific community. For UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, this work has gained new momentum through its achievement in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE WUR) 2027.
UIN Sunan Kalijaga Rector, Prof. Noorhaidi Hasan, announced that the university he leads has placed within the 801–1000 band worldwide. According to him, this achievement puts UIN Sunan Kalijaga in second place nationally, behind Universitas Indonesia.
"I believe this is a historic moment for UIN Yogya, for PTKIN institutions!" he said, responding to the achievement, which he described as a proud accomplishment for the university and for State Islamic Religious Higher Education Institutions (PTKIN) as a whole.
It is worth noting that THE WUR is a global ranking system organized by Times Higher Education to assess university performance with a research-oriented focus. In the 2027 edition, assessment uses 17 indicators across five main areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry relations. Each of these five areas carries its own weighting.
Teaching is assessed through a number of measures, including academic reputation, the student-to-staff ratio, and doctoral education. Research environment covers reputation, funding, and research productivity. Research quality, meanwhile, examines the influence of scholarly publications, including how research is cited and built upon by other scholars. International outlook is assessed through international students, staff, and cross-border research collaboration, while industry relations is measured through research income from industry and patents citing the university's research.
Within this framework, UIN Sunan Kalijaga's position can be read as an overall measure of academic performance under THE's standards. This ranking brings together various aspects of university life, from the educational process and researcher development to the dissemination of knowledge through publication and collaboration.
The 801–1000 band itself represents a range of positions, not a single, precise rank. THE uses ranking bands when the score differences between universities are not statistically significant enough to be presented as an exact ordered list.
For UIN Sunan Kalijaga, this achievement carries significant meaning for the university's development journey. As an institution rooted in the tradition of Islamic scholarship and the Integration-Interconnection paradigm, UIN Sunan Kalijaga's academic performance now stands within a framework of international comparison spanning education, research, and the exchange of knowledge. The scholarly identity built on campus has gained space to engage with broader academic benchmarks and conversations.
Prof. Noorhaidi framed this success as the result of collective effort. He expressed gratitude to the entire academic community, the Senate, the vice rectors, bureau heads, deans, the Director of the Graduate School, and the heads of institutes. Special appreciation was given to the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), which he described as the "commander of the ranking effort."
This recognition underscores the connection between institutional achievement and the everyday work carried out across campus. Research conducted by lecturers, education delivered alongside students, support from administrative staff, and coordination across units all form part of the foundation that allows the university to achieve a place in global rankings.
Ultimately, international recognition finds its deepest meaning when it feeds back into enriching academic life itself, students learning in an increasingly high-quality environment, researchers producing work that carries weight, and knowledge from the university reaching and addressing the problems faced by society. It is there that UIN Sunan Kalijaga's achievement finds its next direction: turning academic reputation into ever-growing trust and benefit. (humassk)
