Hajj is one of the pillars of Islam, carrying a scope far broader than ritual alone. Beyond the spiritual journey itself, it involves matters of service, management, health, communication, human resource development, and the movement of community economies. For that reason, hajj administration needs to be understood from multiple perspectives and managed professionally.
Universities have a strategic role to play in meeting these needs. Through education, universities can prepare competent human resources; through research, they can generate knowledge and innovation related to hajj administration; and through community service, academic work can be applied to strengthen service to pilgrims while also driving community empowerment and economic growth.
This is the spirit behind the partnership between UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta and the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. The collaboration was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by UIN Sunan Kalijaga Rector Prof. Noorhaidi Hasan and Dr. H. Puji Raharjo, M.Hum., M.Ag., Director General of Hajj and Umrah Administration Development (Bina PHU), representing the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, at the Rector's Office on the 2nd floor of the PAU Building on campus, Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
The MoU opens space for collaboration in education, research, and community service. These three areas are expected to serve as the foundation for both institutions to strengthen hajj and umrah administration, from building human resource capacity and developing scholarship and research, to improving the quality of service provided to pilgrims.
UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta Rector Prof. Noorhaidi Hasan described the signing of the MoU as an important milestone in building collaboration between universities and government.
“Today we are witnessing a historic moment through the signing of this MoU between UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta and the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. God willing, this partnership will bring benefit and blessing to both parties, particularly in supporting the success of hajj and umrah administration going forward,” Noorhaidi said.
He affirmed that UIN Sunan Kalijaga stands ready to mobilize its academic strengths in support of this shared agenda. Cross-disciplinary synergy, he said, is essential, since hajj and umrah administration involves far more than the ritual dimension alone; it also encompasses service management, public communication, social welfare, human resource development, and economic empowerment.
At the same event, the Director General of Hajj explained that hajj represents a vast ecosystem involving many stakeholders, including universities. The involvement of higher education institutions is needed to bring innovation and address the many needs of hajj administration through an academic approach.
According to him, universities can contribute through education, the development of hajj-related research, and improving the quality of human resources. This collaboration is also expected to add value to the national economy and to community development.
He added that the success of hajj administration cannot be measured by technical and service aspects alone. It also carries the broader aspiration of building civility and civilization as part of the noble values underlying the pilgrimage.
“Hopefully this partnership produces something meaningful for the Muslim community and contributes to improving public welfare,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dean of UIN Sunan Kalijaga's Faculty of Da'wah and Communication, Prof. Arif Maftuhin, said his faculty has a number of study programs relevant to, and with the potential to actively contribute to, the implementation of this partnership.
“We have discussed several areas that our alumni have long been active in as well. Going forward, the study programs within the Faculty of Da'wah and Communication can play an active role in this partnership, particularly in strengthening service to the Muslim community and in hajj and umrah administration,” Arif said.
The signing of the MoU was witnessed by UIN Sunan Kalijaga's leadership, including the Vice Rectors, Head of the Bureau of General Administration and Finance Dr. Ali Sodiq, Head of the Bureau of Academic Administration, Student Affairs, and Cooperation Dr. Muhammad Lutfi Hamid, as well as officials from the Directorate General of Hajj and other related parties.
This collaboration marks an important and shared effort to deliver hajj and umrah administration that is increasingly professional, oriented toward serving the Muslim community, and beneficial to society at large. (humassk)
