UIN Sunan Kalijaga Rector Supports AICIS+ 2025, Calls It a Strategic Forum for Sharing Ideas on Global Issues

Rector of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, Prof. Noorhaidi Hasan, attended the Annual International Conference on Islam, Science, and Society (AICIS+) 2025 held at the Indonesian International Islamic University (UIII), Depok, from Wednesday (October 29) to Friday (October 31), 2025.

The prestigious academic forum, organized by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia through its Directorate General of Islamic Education, carried the theme “Islam, Ecotheology, and Technological Transformation: Multidisciplinary Innovations for an Equitable and Sustainable Future.” The theme reflects the collective effort of Islamic scholars to respond to the world’s increasingly complex global challenges—from environmental crises to digital transformation.

As a member of the Steering Committee, Prof. Noorhaidi attended the opening ceremony alongside key figures, including Secretary-General Prof. Kamaruddin Amin, Director General of Islamic Education Prof. Amien Suyitno, Director of Islamic Higher Education Prof. Sahiron, and UIII Rector Prof. Dr. Jamhari, among others.

During the conference, Prof. Noorhaidi visited UIN Sunan Kalijaga’s exhibition booth, managed by the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), showcasing various research outputs, innovations, and community-based projects aligned with sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“I am proud to take part in AICIS+ 2025 at UIII Depok. This is a prestigious academic forum that gathers scholars, researchers, and students to share their ideas on pressing global issues,” said Prof. Noorhaidi.

He emphasized that this year’s theme is profoundly relevant to today’s ecological crises caused by human exploitation of nature. Through ecotheology, the academic community is encouraged to reexamine humanity’s relationship with the universe and God’s creation.

“We must cultivate deep ecological awareness and live as responsible stewards of the Earth, ensuring that our planet remains a source of mercy for all beings,” he continued.

AICIS+ 2025 also focuses on digital transformation as an inevitable force shaping education and knowledge. Prof. Noorhaidi stressed that technology should be embraced as an opportunity for research and innovation.

“Technology is evolving rapidly. We must adapt and harness its potential to strengthen scientific progress for the betterment of the nation,” he said.

As Indonesia’s oldest Islamic higher education institution, UIN Sunan Kalijaga remains committed to advancing the two key AICIS themes—ecotheology and digital transformation. Over the past two decades, the university has strengthened its traditional faculties—Ushuluddin, Sharia, Adab, and Da’wah—while expanding scientific exploration through its Faculty of Science and Technology, which leads research, innovation, and knowledge application.

“This year’s AICIS theme inspires us to foster an academic environment that promotes both ecological theology and technological adaptation,” the Rector affirmed. “UIN Sunan Kalijaga will continue to stand at the forefront of efforts to mainstream the discourse on ecotheology and digital transformation.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Abdul Qoyum, Head of LPPM UIN Sunan Kalijaga, stated that the university’s participation in AICIS+ 2025 reflects its commitment to strengthening sustainability-oriented research and innovation.

“Our booth showcases research, technology, and innovation developed by our academic community. The AICIS+ 2025 theme has been incorporated into our grand design and research roadmap to align with our community engagement programs,” he explained.

He added that LPPM places strong emphasis on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of its support for the vision of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Government of Indonesia. “This commitment represents the humanistic orientation that drives every aspect of our research, innovation, and community service,” he concluded.
