Vatican City, October 27, 2025 — Indonesia’s Minister of Religious Affairs, Nasaruddin Umar, delivered an emotional speech on universal brotherhood at the International Forum for Peace titled “Daring Peace” in the Vatican. The event, organized by the Community of Sant’Egidio and attended by global faith leaders, honored the late Pope Francis — a figure Nasaruddin personally knew and deeply admired.

“When I heard the news from the Vatican, I couldn’t believe it,” said Nasaruddin. “All memories of Pope Francis came rushing back. I felt a deep pull in my heart.”

The Minister, accompanied by Indonesian diplomats, recalled receiving news of the Pope’s passing just hours after being invited to speak at the forum. “I had hoped to meet him again this October,” he said softly.

He reflected on their close friendship: “When I kissed his forehead and he kissed my hand, it felt like a spiritual moment — a true symbol of human brotherhood.” The hall fell silent as two photos of that meeting appeared on the screen, moving many to tears.

Pope Francis, he said, taught that love and fraternity transcend religion, race, and nationality — echoing Islam’s own values of human unity. “Our scriptures deliver the same message: humanity stands above all,” Nasaruddin affirmed.

He also recalled the Pope’s historic 2024 visit to Indonesia, when both signed the Istiqlal Declaration with interfaith leaders. “Pope Francis didn’t just speak about love; he lived it,” Nasaruddin said. “He showed us how to serve with humility, compassion, and faith.”
