Faculty of Tarbiyah and Education (FITK), UIN Sunan Kalijaga and KEK Japan Successfully Host the 7th Particle Physics School in Southeast Asia

At least 39 participants from five countries—Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand—took part in the 7th Particle Physics School in Southeast Asia (PPSEA), held from January 19 to 24, 2025, at the Integrated Lecture Building/Gedung Kuliah Terpadu (GKT) of Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. This collaborative event was organized by the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Education (FITK) at UIN Sunan Kalijaga and Japan’s High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK). Focused on B Physics, the program aimed to introduce both foundational concepts and the latest advancements in particle physics.

Over six days, participants explored theoretical and experimental aspects of particle physics, guided by experts from KEK. Renowned figures such as Yutaka Sakamura, Shohei Nishida, Koji Hara, and Hiroshi Kaji delivered lectures on a wide range of topics, from theoretical frameworks and experimental methods to detector innovations and accelerator systems. The event drew 14 international students and 25 Indonesian students, whose diverse academic backgrounds enriched discussions and facilitated collaboration across the ASEAN region.

FITK UIN Sunan Kalijaga and KEK Japan, emphasized that the short course provided an excellent opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of particle physics while engaging with fellow learners and researchers from across Southeast Asia. They added that the strong enthusiasm shown by participants underscored the growing interest in high-energy physics and its potential applications.

Support from local institutions, including UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), and BRIN, ensured the smooth running of the event. Administrative assistance provided by Ms. Mako Kikuchi of KEK helped keep daily sessions organized. Frequent discussion forums not only enhanced the participants’ grasp of cutting-edge research but also strengthened academic networks across national borders.

Buoyed by the success of this year’s program, FITK UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta and KEK have committed to further expanding their collaboration. Plans under discussion include organizing the 8th Particle Physics School in 2026, set to feature additional modules on quantum mechanics and high-energy physics experiments—offering research collaboration opportunities for select participants at KEK and other prestigious institutions, convening joint seminars to bolster regional cooperation in high-energy physics, and establishing a long-term academic exchange program for short-term visits, internships, and research stays.

With its broad international attendance, the 7th Particle Physics School helped advance scientific understanding while forging deeper connections in the particle physics community. Organizers hope this annual event will continue inspiring young researchers to pursue cutting-edge studies in particle physics, thereby contributing to both scientific progress and stronger partnerships throughout the ASEAN region.
