In a public lecture held on March 10, 2025, at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, Syeikh Muhammad Mahmud Muhammad from Al-Azhar University, Cairo, delivered a compelling message on the strategic role of the Arabic language in promoting moderate Islamic values.
Speaking before hundreds of students from undergraduate to doctoral programs, Syeikh Muhammad emphasized the importance of mastering Arabic contextually and empathetically, highlighting that true fluency goes beyond grammar and vocabulary. He positioned Arabic as a transformative tool—not just for understanding classical texts, but for effectively engaging diverse audiences in today’s globalized world.
"Arabic is not only for understanding texts but also for conveying Islam’s message of peace to the world," he said.
He stressed that language, when rooted in empathy and cultural awareness, becomes a bridge between civilizations and a channel for delivering Islamic teachings with wisdom, tolerance, and compassion. In an era where miscommunication can lead to misunderstanding, mastering Arabic in this manner allows da’wah to resonate across cultural and ideological divides.
Moderated by Dr. Nashirudin, the session also highlighted the need for culturally sensitive communication in Islamic outreach, positioning Arabic as a living language that must evolve with time while staying true to its spiritual and ethical foundations. (humassk)
