UIN Sunan Kalijaga Integrated Laboratory Holds Fire Extinguisher Training to Boost Workplace Safety Preparedness

As part of its commitment to Occupational Health and Safety (K3), the Integrated Laboratory of UIN Sunan Kalijaga organized a fire extinguisher (APAR) training on Friday (12/6/2026) at the Integrated Laboratory Greenhouse yard. The training was attended by 50 participants, including Integrated Laboratory staff and representatives from the Faculty of Science and Technology, the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, and the General Affairs Division.

Integrated Laboratory Chair Dr. Arifah Khusnuryani emphasized the importance of equipping all staff with the knowledge and skills to operate fire extinguishers. With 21 units available throughout the Integrated Laboratory building, she stressed that readiness for emergencies is a fundamental part of campus safety culture.

"It is important that we all know how to use them, so that if a fire occurs, we are already prepared to handle it," she said.

The training was delivered by Waryanto from Safety Store, who explained the basic concept of the fire triangle (fuel, heat, and oxygen), and how extinguishing a fire requires eliminating one or more of these elements. Participants were also introduced to two types of fire extinguishers available at the laboratory: powder-based APAR, which smothers burning materials and is effective for solid, liquid, and electrical fires but is single-use once the safety clamp is opened; and CO2 APAR, which works by cooling the heat source and can be recharged for repeated use, making it suitable for liquid and electrical fires.

Beyond theory, participants received hands-on instruction covering how to carry the extinguisher correctly, release the safety lock, check the equipment, hold the hose, position themselves safely in the direction of the fire, maintain an ideal distance of around two meters from the source, and direct the spray toward the nearest point of flame.

The session concluded with a live fire extinguishing drill under instructor supervision, giving participants direct, practical experience in responding to a fire emergency.

Through this training, the Integrated Laboratory of UIN Sunan Kalijaga aims to ensure that all staff are better prepared to respond to fire risks and use fire extinguishers effectively as part of a broader effort to maintain a safe, healthy, and emergency-ready work environment. (humassk)
