As global crises grow in complexity, the role of academic institutions in shaping understanding and offering solutions has never been more critical. In a decisive move, Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University (UIN Sunan Kalijaga) has reaffirmed its international commitment by establishing a strategic partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
In a meeting on campus (11/6), UIN Rector Prof.
Noorhaidi Hasan welcomed the ICRC delegation, which included Novriyantoni,
Network Adviser, Johan Guillaume, Deputy Head of Regional Delegation for
Indonesia, Timor-Leste, and ASEAN, as well as other key representatives. More than
a courtesy call, the encounter marked a tangible effort to forge synergy
between academia and a leading global humanitarian institution.
The discussion focused on pressing humanitarian issues—from armed conflict to civilian crises—that demand multidisciplinary responses. UIN Sunan Kalijaga, known for its academic expertise, particularly in international humanitarian law (IHL), is well-positioned to offer knowledge-based, Islamically grounded solutions to today’s humanitarian challenges.
Beyond dialogue, the ICRC expressed strong
interest in long-term collaboration to advance IHL in academic circles. In
response, Prof. Hasan proposed a series of initiatives to institutionalize
humanitarian law through curriculum integration, academic seminars, collaborative
research, and scholarly publications. The ICRC welcomed these ideas and voiced
support for translating them into concrete programs.
“This partnership reflects our deep commitment
to building a humane, justice-oriented academic platform,” Prof. Noorhaidi Hasan
stated. “We aim not only to analyze global issues but to become an active part
of the solution.”
This initial collaboration signals UIN Sunan Kalijaga’s strategic positioning as a future global center for IHL discourse. For the ICRC, the partnership promises a stronger academic foothold in Southeast Asia. For UIN, it is a step forward in aligning academic pursuit with humanitarian impact.
The meeting concluded with a shared vision: to build a world driven by justice, compassion, and academic rigor. As the world calls for bridges, not walls, UIN Sunan Kalijaga has taken a bold stride toward becoming one of those bridges. (humassk)
