Development and Challenges of Halal Industry amid Global Recession

Yogyakarta – Magister Program Students Association (HMPM) in the faculty of Islamic Economics and Business of UIN Sunan Kalijaga had successfully held a national event called the Islamic Economic Consortium (IEC) in 2020. The IEC event is the first event that is initiated by the Magister Program Students Association (HMPM) Islamic Economic (MES) of UIN Sunan Kalijaga with various activities included.

This event was held on November 6th, 2020 with a series of attractive agendas. The first agenda arranged by the Magister Program Students Association (HMPM) Islamic Economic and Business of UIN Sunan Kalijaga in this event was the Student’s National Seminar entitled “Halal Industry: Development and Challenges amid the Global Recession”. The key speakers who are theexpert in their respective field for this event were Dr. Syaparuddin, S.Ag., M.Si (Dean of Islamic Economic and Business Faculty of IAIN Bone); Coach Wulan (Department Chair of Islamic Economic Community Organization of Yogyakarta); and Bhima Yudhistrira Adhinegara (Researcher from the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF). Each speaker explained the related theme based on different perspectives which were from the academic, practitioner, and researcher perspectives so that the lecture might become more varied and understandable for the seminar participants.

The seminar was opened by the Dean of Islamic Economic and Business Faculty of UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Dr. Afdawaiza, S.Ag, who stated that “currently, the development of halal industry undergoes a significant improvement. In Indonesia, however, a country with the most muslim in the world, can only gain the 5th position, thus a new breakthrough in order to boost Indonesia’s existence in halal industry development is necessary”.

It wassimilar to what Dr. Saparuddin, S.Ag., M.Ag had stated that “Indonesia has three potential sectors in halal industry that can be developed, and they are from the food sector, financial sector, and tourism sector. If those sectors get optimal management, they will bring a significant contribution for the development of Indonesian economy”.

Afterwards, this event continued on that same day with a congress to establish a National Forum of Islamic Economic Magister Program Students all over Indonesia. The event was attended by the representatives of PTKIN all across Indonesia, PTN, and PTS who are also from the Islamic Economic Magister Program.
