Muslim in the Creative Media Industry
Creative industry gives contribution to the development of the world economy. The study of communication science also performs an observation to the development of the world economy. In this case, an International Discussion between two universities bringing in lecturers and students was held to discuss about how big of an attractiveness a Muslim community should possess in building its own creative industry that also has a unique style in the global market.
This issue was discussed in a discussion by the Department of Communication Science, Faculty of Social Science and Humanities (FISHUM), UIN Sunan Kalijaga. This discussion with the theme “Muslim In Creative Media Industries” was held online on Friday, November 13, 2020, by using Zoom and broadcasted live through FISHUM UIN SUKA youtube channel.
Dr. Mochamad Sodik, S.Sos., M.Si. who gave a speech and also started this event expressed his appreciation for the event. He stated that in today’s era of partnership, the attendance of Dr. Nur Kareelawati as the key speaker is important. He hoped that she could give Yogyakarta a visit and share her knowledge with the Social Science (FISHUM) students of UIN Sunan Kalijaga someday.
“This is a challenge for us to face. Moreover, the media industry is a new thing for us because Muslims in a developing country always face the visible industry. Visible in this case means something tangible and more traditional. Then all of a sudden, we are in the era in which things are invisible but actually exist,” added him.
He also said that this event will become a starting point of the cooperation between two institutions. According to Sodik, cooperation is important by knowing that Muslims with their diverse character and strength can also make a cooperation profiting each other.
“This, ladies and gentlemen, is what makes me feel delighted for this event. Here, we can obtain the values that we are able to implement in our daily practices,” he said.
This time, the department of Communication Science (FISHUM) collaborated with the Faculty of Leadership and Management Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia. The discussion invited Dr. Nur Kareelawati Binti Abd Karim and Dr. Rama Kertamukti, the head of the Social Science department, to have a dialogue in developing creativity in the academic circles.
Dr. Diah Ajeng Purwani, S.Sos, M.Si., the secretary of the Social Science department, expressed her gratitude to the Decanate, Speakers, Committee, and also the Audience who participated in this event. She hoped that this event would become a learning facility for the students of both institutions.
“In today's seminar, we would learn about Muslim In Creative Media Industries. I can already see a big potential from the participant. I hope that through this event we all can learn to be a good and critical thinkers,” added her.
